Motorized window coverings are an easy upsell and a genuine solution in specific situations. The question is whether your windows are in that category. Where do motorized blinds help most?
Tall windows, windows above stairs, behind furniture, or in a double-height space: anywhere reaching the blind is awkward enough that it stops getting used. That is our judgment rather than a measured result, and it is the case we find easiest to recommend, because a motor is what gets that blind moving again.
And west-facing glass in Middle Tennessee, where the shading needs closing in the afternoon whether anyone is home or not. The National Weather Service’s Nashville climate page puts the normal July high at 90.9°F, with 17 days in an average July reaching 90°F or more. Even in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s test homes, the researchers kept the shades on the west living and dining room windows halfway closed through the cooling season to hold off afternoon heat and glare.
Should motorized blinds be battery or wired?
Battery motors need no wiring, which makes them the practical retrofit choice. The same PNNL report says a battery-powered shade needs no electrical connection and no electrician, but is best suited to smaller or lighter coverings. How long a charge lasts depends on the motor and on how often the shade moves, so we give you the manufacturer’s own figure for the model we quote instead of a rule of thumb.
Wired is a bigger job with a stronger motor. According to PNNL, hard-wired systems are usually installed during construction and suit heavier shades or several shades run together, which is why we suggest them for new construction or a renovation with the walls open. A plug-in motor sits between the two: it needs no electrician either, though the report notes that the outlets and cords can look unsightly unless the house was built with them in mind.

Automation that earns its place
Closing shades on west and south glass cuts cooling load, and a timer or sun sensor does it on the days nobody remembers. In PNNL’s summer tests, high-efficiency cellular shades saved about 25% of heating and cooling energy, and that saving fell considerably when the larger view windows stayed uncovered during the day, particularly the west- and south-facing ones. Those homes are in Richland, Washington, and the figure is for one insulating shade, so we read it as the size of the effect rather than a promise about your bill.
The report is also fair about what the motor adds. PNNL found that seasonal schedules, whether automated or done by hand, achieved consistent savings too; the closed shade does the saving, and a motor makes sure it happens. Winter runs the other way, with at least some of the larger south- and west-facing shades needing to go up by day and down at night to get the full heating benefit. A 2022 study in Building and Environment measured daily heating energy savings of 17% to 36% from cellular shades in a house, compared with the same room unshaded, and Berkeley Lab’s research on window attachments stresses that how an operable shade is used has a large effect on its energy performance. Most other automation is mainly convenience: scenes, voice control, a bedroom shade that lifts with the alarm. That is a legitimate thing to want, but it should be priced as such. PNNL does see more in it, noting that automated shades could be paired with thermostat setbacks to support residential demand-response programs and improve comfort, though what that is worth depends on your thermostat and your utility.
Longevity questions
Ask what happens if the manufacturer’s app or cloud service is discontinued, and whether the blinds still operate from a physical remote or wall switch.
A shade is bought to stay on the window for years, and an app lasts only as long as its maker supports it, so we prefer motors that run from a remote or switch with no cloud service in between. Whether a hub is needed for basic operation differs from one system to the next, and we check the manual for the product we quote rather than assume.
